Your career over? My, aren’t we dramatic! I know this is what some people are afraid of AND, in my answer, I explain what the problem usually is. (From the archives)
Don’t Settle When They Make The Offer
Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a career coach who helps people with job search, hiring, managing and leading, you know, just overall workplace issues. If no recruiter is contacting me on LinkedIn, is my career over? Wow! Drama! So, the likely explanation . . . well, it’s certainly possible that what you’re doing is not marketable to recruiters.
That is a possibility. The probability is not that. The probability is your LinkedIn profile sucks and you need to clean it up.
How does it suck? Bad picture, bad headline under your name. More importantly, the profile does not include relevant keywords that someone would use to find someone like you. Understand, LinkedIn sells to recruiters, both corporate and third party, the ability to search the entire database of LinkedIn members, 650 million people.
And unless you are using keywords, you’re invisible. It’s kind of like going to a job board and searching for jobs. If you pick the wrong term, you’re not going to find the job that’s relevant to you, right? Same thing for them.
When they’re trying to find someone to fill a job, have to be in the right geographic area, of course, have to have the right level of experience, have to use keywords that demonstrate your fit for roles that you’re qualified for. And how do you find those? Search on LinkedIn. Look at the jobs that are listed there for what you do and notice the language that’s used to describe what it is you do and replicate it in your profile.
